Greenville is a tiny town located in Floyd County. The town is over 190 years old and was originally chosen to be the county seat. However, when a resident offered the donation of a bell for the courthouse with the requirement that New Albany be the seat, the county commissioners couldn’t resist the offer. Thus, New Albany became the Floyd County seat. Greenville, though small, has several distinctions to its name. The town had the first school and the first post office in the county and became the hometown of the “father of plate glass”, John B. Ford. Ford operated many notable businesses in the area, but is most well-known for making the first plate glass in America.

As of 2010, there were approximately 600 people living in Greenville, most of which are employed in neighboring Southern Indiana towns (such as New Albany) and Louisville. At last count, median household income was $49,271 and the median income for a family was $50,972. 4% of the population was below the poverty line.
