Charlestown is a small town, but one that makes a lasting impact. The population was very small until 1940, when the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant was constructed. Because of the large number of jobs created by the new plant, the population increased from 900 to 13,400. The plant eventually closed, but thankfully the River Ridge Development Authority was established to replace the lost revenue generated by the Ammunition Plant. Enter River Ridge Commerce Center, a 6,000 acre business park that already houses countless businesses and is methodically adding more. River Ridge Commerce Center © is a major contributor to economic growth in the area. Studies have shown that it generates roughly $1.3 billion of overall economic impact and $388 million in labor income.

As well as being the hometown of Todd Paxton, Charlestown is widely known for its vibrant Christmas festivities. The day after Thanksgiving, Christmas in Charlestown is kicked off by Light Up Charlestown, an hour-long program with quite a finale: the flipping of the light switch! Other winter activities include skating rink, train rides, carriage rides, a Christmas Parade, Breakfast with Santa, and Christmas light displays. You truly do not want to miss Christmas in Charlestown.
